Editor’s Review

Website: www.hostgator.com

Hostgator is one of the top 10 ranked hosting companies of the world due to the fact that the server uptime guarantee is 99.99% powered by Dual Xeon Servers. There are over 75 scripts with one-click installation features. These are:

  • WordPress
  • Joomla!
  • PHPNuke
  • Galleries2
  • Magento
  • Drupal
  • CSS

As with top ten hosting companies, Hostgator offers free advertising credit for Google advertising. This is a welcome bonus by the company to kick start the new business. Along with free incentives, you get over 4,500 free website templates the company is providing free website builder so that you can develop professional business or personal websites within minutes without any programming language.

No Windows hosting in shared hosting environment.

Price:

In terms of value, shared hosting starting at $3.96 is great but that only allows 1 domain. Overall Hostgator’s packages are the most reasonably priced in the industry. Their VPS, Reseller & Dedicated Servers are priced so low that you would hardly find another host providing the same features at the same or lower price.

Speed:

Personally I am impressed by the speed of the shared hosting, although speed does also depend upon the optimization of your website, but by checking a website hosted on the shared hosting by iwebtools.com I got a speed of 0.01 Average speed per Kilobyte, which for shared hosting is incredible. Such speed can only be expected from dedicated servers but looks like hostgator does not oversell their shared servers.

Reliability:

They claim that they provide 99.9% uptime guaranteed. According to uptimeauditor.com the figure is on average 99.961%. In the year 2012 the since 1st January to 18th May there were 64 outages. In May 2012 there has been downtime of only 38 minutes, in April the downtime was only 16 minutes, in March it was 3 .

Help & Support:

Although competition is getting fierce, hostgator is growing due to it’s solid customer services. According to them there are at any time 200 customer services staff ready to provide help & support. Checking the response time of online chat for technical support the response time was 19 seconds. And calling the support toll free number the response time was 3 seconds after selecting the relevant option on the phone menu.

Pros:

  • Unlimited domains per account
  • Unlimited bandwidth
  • Unlimited disk space
  • Unlimited MySQL databases
  • Fantastico: one-click installation
  • Quick and reliable support for your queries
  • 99.99% server uptime guarantees

Cons:

  • No Windows Hosting in shared hosting environment.
  • You cannot get a dedicated IP address for SEO purposes. You can only get it for SSL.
  • Limited usage of system resources.
  • Use of more than 50,000 inodes (inode is a file or directory) on shared account could result in suspension.
  • There is a 200 hourly email limit per domain.

Conclusion – Should you buy it?

Which Hosting would highly recommend Hostgator. They have achieved phenomenal success over the past couple of years due to outstanding server uptime guarantees. In terms of performance their VPS and dedicated hosting are although not the fastest but quite reasonably priced.

  1. Since hostgator is as big as godaddy, i wud compare the two. Hostgator’s support is excellent but during peak hours the wait can be extraordinary whereas godaddy’s support is not a lot but a bit better. Speed is not excellent but above average, compared to godaddy its better in the speed department. As far as reliability goes, hostgator is the host to choose, I’ve noticed downtime on godaddy but have never experienced any downtime on my hostgator website. Speed is a tiny bit better than godaddy.
Overall it is one of the top hosting companies, but compared to godaddy it a tiny bit better.

  2. I’ve been hostgator’s vps customer since early 2011. Their vps is one of the most cheapest managed vps in the industry. I’ve never seen any downtime & they do not oversell; so you will always get the cpu speed they promised u. They do offer 2 ips but that’s about it, you cannot later ask for more. Other than the additional ip problem, hostgator has no competition. They are the most perfect hosting company i’ve seen.

  3. Hostgator has been one of the most popular hosting firm in the online world today….we have a couple of sites with them for a couple of years now and they seem to be very reliable and hardly giving us any issues so far:)

  4. I love HostGator! I used to use GoDaddy (and still do to purchase domains) but I do all my hosting with hostgator. Great support, quality servers, and great people.

  5. I’m currently with x10hosting which used to be reliable and fast yet not expensive. But lately they had so many problems and their customer support is so ignorant, I’m actually considering breaking the contract (yes – they fail to provide 99.9% up time) and moving away. I heard a lot of good reviews of hostgator but when I last checked they had no attractive promotions or packages. I would still seriously consider moving over to hostgator or trying them in the future.
